Driveway Permit Application

It is understood that:

  1. All fees and approvals are required prior to issuance of a driveway permit or starting work.
  2. No construction or landscaping on municipal lands save and except for approved work.
  3. All costs for tree removals and/or replacement will be the expense of the applicant.

Permit Fees

$112.00 for the administrative fee

$200.00 for the deposit

Payment can be made online through this application. Applications will not be processed until such time as the appropriate permit fee has been remitted. Payment can also be made in person at the Municipal Office (600 Tomlinson Dr, Port Elgin, ON).  

Regulations

Residential Zone (3 dwelling units or less)

Driveway Width

  • minimum is 3.0m
  • maximum is 7.5m or no more than 50% of the lot frontage for lots less than 15 m

Number of Driveways

  • 1 driveway for the first 15 m of street line
  • 2 driveways for the first 30 m of street line plus 1 additional driveway for each additional 30 m of street line thereafter.

Yards in Which Parking Area Permitted

  • Interior side yard and rear yard
  • No part of any parking area shall be located closer than 1 m to any lot line
  • No more than 50% of the area of a front yard or exterior side yard of any lot in a Residential Zone shall be devoted to parking area

Surfacing

As per Section 3.24.9 of Zoning By-law 75-2006, all driveways in urban areas shall comply with the Town of Saugeen Shores Engineering Development Manual. The homeowner/ builder will be required to hard surface the driveway apron (the area between the paved portion of the street and the front lot line). If there is a sidewalk located through the driveway, the homeowner is required to hard surface the Town property on both sides of the sidewalk.

Agricultural Zone

Driveway Width

  • minimum is 3.0m
  • maximum is 10.0m

Number of Driveways

  • 1 driveway for the first 30 m of frontage plus 1 additional driveway for each additional 30 m of frontage thereafter, to a maximum of 3 driveways

Yards in Which Parking Area Permitted

  • All yards provided that no part of any parking area, other than a driveway, is located closer than 3 m to any street line.
  • Driveway serving a non-residential use shall not be located closer than 3 m to a lot containing a dwelling as a principle use.

Surfacing

  • Driveways in an Agricultural Zone shall be finished with a hard surface or treated with crushed stone or gravel.

Commercial Zone

Driveway Width

  • minimum is 3.0m for one-way traffic
  • minimum is 6.0m for two-way traffic
  • maximum is 10.0m

Number of Driveways

  • 1 driveway for the first 30 m of frontage plus 1 additional driveway for each additional 30 m of frontage thereafter, to a maximum of 3 driveways

Yards in Which Parking Area Permitted

  • All yards provided that no part of any parking area, other than a driveway, is located closer than 3 m to any street line.

Surfacing

  • Driveways in a Commercial Zone shall be finished with a hard surface

Culverts
During processing of your Application, the Public Works Department will determine if a driveway culvert is required at your entrance. If a culvert is required, the minimum size (width and length) will be noted on your Permit. The purchase, installation and maintenance of driveway culverts, including costs, is the responsibility of the property owner.
