Burn Permit Application Process

A burn permit is required for open air burning in the rural area of Saugeen Shores.

Per section 3.9 of bylaw 30-2004 states that "No fire other than a recreational fire may be set or allowed to burn within the boundaries of the Town of Saugeen Shores except by a person who is actively farming land and who wishes to set or maintain a fire on farm lands for purposes which are normal and incidental to the farm use". 

A minimum of 48 hours is required to process burn permits. Once you've submitted your application, the Saugeen Shores Fire Department will review it and then contact you. 

Please note: you must call the Saugeen Shores Fire Department at 519-389-6120 to activate your burning permit each time you wish to burn. 

General Provisions 

• You need an annual burn permit before you do any burning and all permits expire December 31 of the year you submitted the application.
• You must constantly supervise and control your fires at all times
• Always have proper means of extinguishment on site
• You can only burn clean and clear wood or wood by-products of clean clear wood; you can not burn household waste and yard waste
• Smoke from the fire cannot negatively affect neighbours;l complaints may terminate the permit. Do not burn on days where smoke will blow across roadways and hamper driving visibility
• Any contraventions to the Open Air Burning By-law will terminate the burn permit. If the Chief Fire Official, Officer or a member of the Saugeen Shores Fire Department deems a fire to be in contravention of the burning by-law, they will extinguish the fire.
• You must obtain approval prior to the start of the burn from the Saugeen Shores Fire Department
• Burning is only permitted between dawn until dusk.  All fires must be extinguished by dusk.
